Yom Kippur Afternoon Study: Adult Discussion Group
Breaking the Law to Change the Law
| Date: |
Fri., Sept. 21, 2007 |
| Time: |
approx. 1:30 - 2:30 pm |
In Jewish law, there are times when “It is time to do
God’s work, by overturning the law.”
Sometimes the inner voice of conscience conflicts with the
mandates of the law. In American history, great movements of
civil disobedience have grown up in response to laws that were
considered unjust. This year in our Yom Kippur afternoon
discussion we will look at the two classic cases in the halachah
of “Eyt Laasot L’adonai” (It is time to do
God’s work....). We will also consider what mechanism the
halachah provides for changing Jewish law, particularly when
conscience and law conflict.
Join Rabbi Aron to explore how we balance the demands of
conscience and the requirements of Jewish or civil law.
Approximately 1:30 pm - 2:30 pm,
during the break between the Yom Kippur morning and afternoon services.
Led by Rabbi Aron.
