LEARNING
Opportunities for Adult Learning, 2011–2012
One of the primary missions of Congregation Shir Hadash is to provide educational opportunities for our adult members. Every year numerous courses, programs, speakers, and special educational activities are made available.
This year we are pleased to offer a series of 16 Sunday morning talks by notable speakers, including TV and movie personality Mayim Bialik and KQED radio host Michael Krasny. These lectures will address a wide variety of topics that we think will be of special interest to parents of Religious School students, as well as to all members of our congregation. This series, Exploring the World of Judaism, is generously supported by a grant from the Newton and Rochelle Becker Charitable Trust, which was established to encourage parents of Religious School students to participate in adult Jewish learning, as well as the Bureau of Jewish Education of San Francisco/Marin/Peninsula/Sonoma.
A highlight of each year’s Adult Education series is the Levine Family Lecture and this year’s distinguished lecturer will be Dan Walters, an expert on California politics and columnist for the Sacramento Bee. His lecture promises to be of particular interest in this important election year.
This year we are also pleased to support a May weekend retreat at Asilomar Conference Center in Pacific Grove that will have as its theme, Jewish Food. A wide range of related topics will be discussed, including food production and distribution, food justice, cultural and religious practices, recipes and family traditions.
In addition to the lectures and retreat, a wide range of programs and classes will be offered. Some will be repeats of popular classes from past years and others will be entirely new.
You may contact Michael Schneider, Chair of the Adult Education Committee, at , or Patty Cruz at the Shir Hadash office, , 358-1751, ext 7.
