The Book of Deuteronomy contains, according to legend, the final addresses of Moses to the people of Israel. The Greek title of the book, Deuteronomy (which means Second Law), suggests that Moses was retelling the events and laws of the previous 40 years. Then, the legend continues, the book was rediscovered five centuries after Moses’ time, when King Josiah was having the Jerusalem Temple refurbished (approximately 610 BCE). Upon reading the book, Josiah discovered that the Jews were not following the teachings of Moses.

Historians argue that the book was actually written five centuries after its supposed original authorship. Nonetheless, Deuteronomy has become an important part of the Torah. We will study several significant passages from this fascinating book.
