Jewish Food: A Weekend of Nourishing Your Body and Soul In the Beauty of Pacific Grove

A Weekend of Learning and Celebration of our Heritage and Respect for Food.

Join in a weekend of fun and learning and experience the joy of Shabbat oceanside with other temple members.

This year the theme is Food...an important topic for Jews!

Program:
Friday evening we’ll gather together to welcome Shabbat with a special dinner followed by a short service and a social hour with opportunities to share Jewish food memories.

Saturday morning starts with (optional) Jewish alphabet yoga, breakfast, participatory Shabbat services and Torah Study, led by Rabbi Aron.

Saturday afternoon will include a presentation by Rabbi Richard Litvak, Senior Rabbi, Temple Beth El, Aptos and contributing author to CCAR’s The Sacred Table: Creating a Jewish Food Ethic.

Saturday afternoon optional activities include crafts, docent-led hikes around beautiful Asilomar as well as a children’s hike.

Saturday night chocolate and wine tasting follows dinner. Sample gourmet chocolates with Sunita de Tourreil, the owner of Palo Alto’s The Chocolate Garage. Learn how chocolate’s provenance contributes to the ethical enjoyment of this universal favorite.

Sunday morning enjoy a walk with a local birder, followed by a scrumptious breakfast. After breakfast Evan Bloom and Leo Beckerman of the new Wise Sons Jewish Delicatessen (since 5771) will discuss creating the corned beef and pastrami we crave and their mission to bring the nostalgia of Jewish food to San Francisco from Brooklyn!

Sue Fishkoff, acclaimed journalist and recently appointed editor of “j”, the Jewish news weekly of Northern California, will speak about her recent book, Kosher Nation: Why More and More of America’s Food Answers to a Higher Authority.

Gather with Shir Hadash members of all ages and form new bonds of friendship as we discuss Jews and food at beautiful Asilomar.
