“When you teach your children, you teach your
children’s children.”
—Talmud
Congregation Shir Hadash’s youth education program focuses
on giving our children a sense of Jewish identity and imparting
to them tools they may use in their lives, both at Temple and in
the larger community.
Our programs, under the direction of our Rabbi Educator Lisa
Levenberg, serve as a place where our children will encounter
God, Torah and Israel. As part of our mission of being an
evolving Reform Jewish congregation, we offer our children a
place to learn, grow, build community and be challenged as they
become more mature members of the congregation.
Our Religious School is a cornerstone of our Congregation life.
We have classes for K through 6th grades on Sunday mornings, 7th
through 10th grade on Tuesday evenings and Hebrew classes on
Tuesday or Thursday afternoons. We also offer special programs
for preschool-aged students and workshops and seminars for 11th
and 12th graders. Our programs include dance, music, cooking art,
and special holiday activities. K-6 grade students are invited
to sing in our children’s choir.
We encourage students to begin their religious education in
Kindergarten and to start Hebrew class in the 3rd grade in
preparation for B’nai Mitzvah training later on. We have a
family oriented educational program, which provides numerous
opportunities for parents to participate in the learning process
on Sunday mornings. The school program is reinforced by a dynamic
youth group system with fun, age appropriate activities for
students from grade 3 through twelve.
In addition to our school programs, we also offer opportunities
for families with young children to learn and connect.
We’re excited about our new Preschool Pajama Parties,
featuring Linda “Rainbow the Clown” Levine, in which
families can learn new ways to make Judaism special and still be
home by bedtime! A lively Tot Shabbat service is offered on the
3rd Saturday of the month. A playgroup/havurah is another
opportunity for families with toddlers to connect.
