B'reishit
What It Means
Meet the Sofer
Meet the Sofer
By Kathy Wiemers
Rabbi Druin, Sofer and master storyteller, is coming to Shir
Hadash. His ability to humorously relate to audiences of all ages
has endeared him to communities around the country where he
teaches and educates while writing new Torah scrolls and
restoring existing scrolls. In Rabbi Druin's educational
programs, all ages observe and participate as they learn about
this 3000 year old skill.
Rabbi Moshe Druin was born in New York. At the age of six, his
family made Aliyah to northern Israel where he attended the local
public school. After Bar Mitzvah, he attended various Yeshivot
throughout Israel while developing talents in storytelling,
drawing, acting and music. As part of his personal spiritual
journey, Rabbi Druin explored the three main streams of Judaism.
Rabbi Druin was ordained as a Rabbi and a Scribe (Sofer) in New
York, where he met his wife Ahuva. They moved to Johannesburg,
South Africa in 1988, where he served as Rabbi, Sofer, Youth
Director and Vice-President of the Jewish High School. Rabbi
Druin produced and edited a South African children's magazine.
While in Johannesburg, he studied community psychology, personal
development and motivation, and family relationships. In 1998,
Rabbi Druin and his family returned to live in North Miami Beach,
Florida.
Rabbi Druin will be at Shir Hadash on many occasions throughout
2005. Join us on January 22, 2005 when we write the first letter
of the Torah with Rabbi Druin.
