Support for the Worldwide Reform Movement
Congregation Shir Hadash is proud to be part of a regional effort to support the work of the Reform movement around the world.
Our current representative to the regional council of the Association of Reform Zionists of America/World Union for Progressive Judaism, Linda Levenson, has been particularly active in supporting the growth of Reform Judaism in the Former Soviet Union. Linda initiated a program, which has been held twice, bringing young lay leaders from the FSU’s Reform movement to California. They have gained from their exposure to the active and vibrant Reform congregations in our region, and we have benefited from the first hand reports that they brought of what Reform Jewish life is like in their communities. Their energy and vitality were contagious.
Support for Reform Congregations Overseas
At Shir Hadash we have also been involved in projects to provide financial support for Reform congregations overseas and to encourage our members to visit Reform congregations when they travel for business or pleasure. One of the congregation’s Torah scrolls is on long term loan to a congregation in Germany which has been re-born in recent years with the influx of Jews from the FSU.
Overseas Visits to Reform Congregations
It is important to make pre-arrangements in visiting Reform congregations around the world because of security concerns. This can be done through the website of the World Union.
Educational program on Israel are held regularly for both adults and young people and we are proud to participate in the local community’s annual Yom HaAtazmaut (Israeli Independence Day) celebration.
