A Special Introduction to the Holidays

Can a Scientific Outlook Be Compatible with “Avinu Malkeinu”?

Congregation Shir Hadash won recognition this year in being selected as one of twelve congregations across the country participating in the Scientists in Synagogues 2018 cohort. Run by Sinai and Synapses and in consultation with the American Association for the Advancement of Science (AAAS) Dialogue on Science, Ethics and Religion (DoSER), Scientists in Synagogues will involve synagogue communities in productive conversations about crucial and thought-provoking issues relating to science, society, and Jewish values.

To kick off the 18-month program, we will explore the question of the compatibility of science and religion by screening three short films and holding a community conversation. Highlighting Jewish perspectives, we will include a short film presentation by Mayim Bialik as well as materials of a general nature from the AAAS. We will also focus on how we approach the traditions of the High Holy Day period given the scientific mindset of most members of the Jewish community since studies show that, unlike Christians, when Jews feel that science and religion conflict, they choose science overwhelmingly.
