Sesame Shul, Kindergarten and 1st Grade Family Program

We believe that our students can have a richer religious school experience when they have opportunities to learn with their families. Our grade-wide family programs are engaging, accessible, and interesting. They directly correspond to what our students are studying in their classrooms. Our programs help our students and their families feel more connected to each other, to other congregants, to their teachers and clergy, and to Judaism.  They take place on Sunday morning during Religious School.

Theme: My Family Tree and Me

“My Family Tree and Me” – Family Education Morning for ….

Research shows that children and adolescents who know more of their family stories show higher well-being on multiple measures, including higher self-esteem, higher academic competence, high social competence, and fewer behavior problems.  The opening stories of the Torah also share family stories of the first Jewish family.  In this special program co-led by your child's teacher and Rabbi Laurie Matzkin (APJCC’s Mindful Jewish Journeys Educator), you will explore your own family stories and share them with your children in a guided conversation.  Parents will engage in a lively discussion about the relationships between our Jewish “Avot and Imahot” – Abraham, Sarah and their progeny. Come home with a creative project to honor and remember your own “recent ancestors.”
