Journalism in a Populist Age

Lessons from Israel and the U.S.

Featuring Dr. Anat Balint, Israel Institute Visiting Scholar at San Francisco State University

The recent rise of populism in Israel and the U.S. has both challenged and highlighted the pivotal role of media in our democracies. Attacks on mainstream media publications in the U.S. have become a common occurrence. Similarly, in Israel we've witnessed a degradation of the media over the past decade, with intense political pressure and media manipulation occurring at the highest levels.

How should we respond to the various attacks on the media - whether blatant or less conspicuous - and how can we fight back against fake news? Join us in conversation with the brilliant Israeli media researcher and scholar, Dr. Anat Balint.

Dr. Anat Balint is an Israeli media scholar and former Haaretz media correspondent. She is also a member of the editorial board of the Seventh Eye, an independent media watchdog and NIF grantee. She writes about political and economic pressures brought upon the media and frequenly comments on questions of journalism ethics and freedom of the press in Israel. She is currently an Israel visiting scholar at San Francisco State University.
