Mitzvah Day!

9:00 AM - 2:00 PMShir Hadash CampusPlease join this community-wide, congregational Mitzvah Day event! We will have several large events that enable us to engage in communal acts of gemilut chasadim (loving kindness), tikkun olam (repairing the world), and shomrei adamah (guarding the earth). Read on for important information!
Schedule:
- 9am to 9:30am: Coffee, Bagels, and Schmoozing as we get ready for the day
- 9:30am to 9:45am: Kick-Off T'filah in the Sanctuary
- 9:45am-10am: Break out into projects and go to your project area!
- 10am until Finished (12pm for most projects): Work on your chosen Mitzvah Project!
Projects:
Baby Clothes Sorting for Loved Twice *FULL*
-What: Sorting and bundling baby clothes and supplies in the Parenting Center, to be donated to Loved Twice.
-Who: Ages 12+, but toddlers/little-ones can play in the Parenting Center areas while their grown-ups volunteer!
Gardening Projects![]()
-What: Help in big and small ways in the Shir Hadash Garden - there is brush to clear, mulch chips to move, branches to prune, and so much more!
-Who: Ages 12+, OR a child under 12 is allowed with a supervising parent co-volunteering alongside them.
Paper Lunch Bag Decorating
-What: Special meals delivered by Loaves and Fishes go in these bags - let's make them look special, encouraging, and kind by decorating these bags for Loaves & Fishes to use during meal distribution.
-Who: Perfect for all ages including young children, youth, and adults!
Friendly Note Card Writing for Lunch Bags![]()
-What: Write friendly notes of encouragement and support to be paired with meals being delivered by Loaves & Fishes.
-Who: Ages 10+who are able to write nicely on the note cards with legible handwriting.
Hygeine/Warming Kits for the Unhoused *FULL*
-What: Create care packages for local unhoused people. There is a huge local need for warming and hygiene kits with essential supplies for our unhoused community members. These will go to the Bill Wilson center for distribution.
-Who: All ages of volunteers are welcome.
Books for Incarcerated Persons *FULL*![]()
-What: The county jail has a need for Jewish literature and especially Jewish prayer books (books about Torah, Tanachs and Siddurim), but they must be processed in a special way (covers removed respectfully) in order to become usable within the jail system.
-Who: Adults 18+ who are comfortable using a razor blade.
TUESDAY Delivery of Items (Driving Task)
-What: Come to Shir Hadash AFTER Mitzvah Day, on Tuesday, Jan 20, and pick up items to be dropped off across town - the Kits for the Unhoused go to the Bill Wilson Center, and the Paper Lunch Bags go to Loaves & Fishes.
-Who: Volunteers with a valid driver's license.
