January 30, 2026 is Shabbat Shirah, the Sabbath of Song. This Shabbat which coincides with the Torah reading Shirat Hayam, the Song of the Sea, is also often known as the Cantor’s Shabbat as it may include more music than usual. Our Shir Hadash Choir will help lead us in song and worship as we remember the beautiful music of Debbie Friedman, in observance of her 15th yahrtzeit.
Debbie Friedman (1951-2011) was a groundbreaking American Jewish singer-songwriter and composer who revolutionized Jewish liturgical music by blending traditional prayers with contemporary folk melodies, making Judaism more accessible and participatory across denominations. Known for popular songs like "Mi Shebeirach" and "Oseh Shalom," she was a pioneer in using inclusive, gender-sensitive language in liturgy, bringing ancient texts to life for new generations through her soulful, self-taught music and empowering leadership.
We will also be celebrating the 90th birthday of Shell Rubenstein with a catered dinner from Wise Sons Jewish Deli. Shell is a founding member of Shir Hadash. In the early days, she was the temple secretary and the first person that greeted one as they walked into the building and today, she is still a mainstay in our office, as assistant to the Cantor. Dinner will be kindly sponsored by Jodi and Richard Muirhead and will be free. Please RSVP below by Jan 25 to ensure there is enough food for all. No gifts please; if you wish, consider a donation to the music fund in her honor.
Together for song and service is the perfect way to warm our spirits even if the weather outside is chilly.
- 5:30pm: Casual schmooze with small bites.
- 6pm: Shabbat Service - blankets and quiet activities will be set out for the children.
- 7:15pm: Dinner immediately after service. We will be serving herb roasted chicken, braised brisket, sauteed spinach, wild mushroom dumplings, mashed potatoes, and salad, with birthday cake for dessert!
