Worship & Holiday

At Shir Hadash we have a variety of services, each with their own style. Our members love to sing, and our services include music reflecting a wide range of composers and musical styles appropriate to each service. All services are open to all who wish to worship with us. Only the major High Holy Day services require advance arrangements.

Babysitting is now available at selected services.

Friday Night Worship

Family Shabbat — The Family Friendly Service

Family Shabbat services generally fall on the 1st Friday of the month. They begin at 7:00 pm. and are preceded by an affordable, family-friendly potluck dinner at 6:00 pm. This special worship opportunity is designed for elementary-school-aged children and their families. Filled with camp-style music and hand motions, led by Rabbis Aron and Schwartz, and our song leaders, the Family Shabbat features a “hands-free siddur.” In addition to worship, this 45-minute-long service includes a special Shabbat story and birthday blessings.

Shabbat with the Band

Celebrate Shabbat with a lively, interactive, musical service on the second Friday of the month.  We often introduce fresh music from both established and emerging Jewish composers each month.  Guitar, bass and drums add to the dynamic experience.  This service begins at 7:30and lasts about an hour.

Shabbat Worship

On the 3rd, 4th, and occasionally 5th Shabbat of the month, services are held at 7:30 pm. The service, geared for adults, may include a sermon delivered by Rabbi Aron or, a participatory presentation, or visit by an outside speaker. The congregation’s volunteer choir typically joins us on the 3rd week of the month. On the last Friday of the month, the service includes a Torah reading and discussion of the weekly portion.

Saturday Morning Worship

Shir Shabbat Services

Between Simchat Torah and Shavuot, when there is a Bar or Bat Mitzah service in the sanctuary, Shir Shabbat services are held in the chapel as an alternative. Beginning at 10:30 am, Shir Shabbat services are predominantly lay-led, with congregational volunteers leading the service as well as the Torah and Haftarah readings. Click here for the year's schedule and opportunities to have a role in the service.

Community Shabbat Services

Community Shabbat services take place on Saturday mornings throughout the year on which there is no Bar or Bat Mitzvah. Led by our clergy team, these services often feature a special theme or program in addition to the reading of the Torah. Watch for these services once or twice a month.

Shir Shabbat Jr.

A fun-filled morning of Shabbat songs, stories, and play, led by Rabbi Schwartz during the school year.
Final service of the 2017-18 school year: May 5.

Everyone is welcome. You do not need to be a member. Shir Hadash embraces GLBTQ, interfaith, and multi-racial families. For more information, contact Rabbi PJ Schwartz.

Parshah Calendar

Congregation Shir Hadash uses the Israeli parsha calendar, rather than the Diaspora parshah calendar. This means that some years, for part of the year, we are reading parshot one week earlier than some local congregations.
