10:00 AM - 11:00 AMchapel/zoom

Members of the Shir Hadash community have been engaged in environmental action for many years, in different ways, working under the title “Shomrei Adamah” (Guardians of Earth), “The Green Team” and now as Shir Sustainability.

The committee is composed of 5 subcommittees to ensure the congregation’s actions meet high standards of sustainability and to encourage congregants to incorporate sustainable practices into their own lives.

  • Facilities: Focuses on the Congregation’s indoor environments and efficient use of energy, environmentally friendly supplies and procedures.
  • Food: Investigates ways to ensure the Congregation’s food systems (such as Preschool food; Religious School Food; Oneg; CSA; etc.) meet high standards of sustainability.
  • Garden/Landscape: Identifies sustainable practices in congregational green spaces (such as Preschool Garden; Religious School Garden; Memorial/Native Species garden; plum grove) to ensure Congregation meets high standards of environmental stewardship. Participants may also assist in the garden. To volunteer in the garden, email: garden@shirhadash.org
  • Political Action: Investigates ways for congregants to push for environmental policy change in their cities, state, and nation.
  • Transportation: Investigates and proposes ways to ensure congregants optimize sustainable transportation options (such as carpool opportunities; ride-shares; public transportation; group walks; bicycling; and electric vehicle charging) to and from Congregation events.
