We regularly mine our texts to explore our relationship to the history of Jewish social justice movements, and to gain insights into how we can build a just society. Yom Kippur afternoon is a good time to think about what motivates each of us to say “hineini”—I am here—to perform an act of kindness (chesed), an act of philanthropy (tzedakah) or an act of justice (tzedek), and when we want to say “hineinu” as a congregation.
