Tikkun Olam - Repairing the World

About shoc - shir hadash organizing committee

The Jewish value of tikkun olam (repairing the world) inspires our Shir Hadash Organizing Committee (SHOC) to work toward systemic social change through grassroots organizing and advocacy. An important part of SHOC's work involves participation in faith-based community organizing in collaboration with a network of other congregations in the South Bay called People Acting in Community Together (PACT).

SHOC meets monthly to discuss and organize grassroots and advocacy support for a number of issues that affect our community. Everyone is welcome, so please check the calendar and attend the next SHOC meeting to learn more! Contact office@shirhadash.org with any questions.

Overview of Advocacy

  • Advocacy on Immigration: Our congregation is a sanctuary space able to house asylum seekers in urgent need. We provide this and other support to asylum seekers and others throughout the immigration process.
  • Advocacy on Community Issues: Housing, gun violence prevention, and combating antisemitism are among some of the issues we are currently engaged on. SHOC periodically conducts listening campaigns ensure that we continually address emerging issues facing our local community.

Funding

In 2018, the Esther Young Wedner Fund for Social Justice was established through a generous grant to support all activities under the social justice umbrella.
