The Worlds of Contemporary Judaism from Ultra-Orthodox to Jewish Renewal

Judaism in the United States is currently experiencing several seismic shifts. These include the dramatic growth of the Haredi population and the emergence of a new American Judaism that is no longer rooted in the traditional Jewish culture of Eastern Europe, where a vast majority of America's Jews originated. For centuries, Jewish identity has defied easy characterization, combining elements of religion, ethnicity, and culture. Given these changes, will that continue to be the case in the twenty-first century?

Nathaniel Deutsch is Professor of History at the University of California, Santa Cruz, where he holds the Murray Baumgarten Endowed Chair in Jewish Studies.  He is the author of the forthcoming books, A Fortress in Brooklyn: Race, Real Estate, and the Making of Hasidic Williamsburg, (with Michael Casper), Yale University Press, 2021, and The Lost World of Russia's Jews: Ethnography and Folklore in the Pale of Settlement, (with Noah Barrera), Indiana University Press, 2021.

Exploring the World of Judaism is a program of Congregation Shir Hadash and Jewish LearningWorks and is supported in party by the Newton and Rochelle Becker Charitable Trust and the Myra Reinhard Family Foundation. We do exciting and important volunteering work for our community. If you are interested to join us or learn more about the work we do, please reach out to Sharla Kibel at board-adulteducation@shirhadash.org.
