Shavuot Festival & Service

Tuesday, June 11, 2024 5 Sivan 5784

5:30 PM - 10:30 PMPatio and Oneg Room

Come enjoy a wonderful Shavuot Festival here at Shir Hadash!

What is Shavuot? A special time to celebrate the giving of "first fruits" (grains, fruits, and vegetables), and celebrate the start of summer! Together we'll be enjoying delicious dairy desserts, a service outside on our patio, and honoring the joy of learning at our Festival of Learning!

We can't wait to have scholar Rabbi Dalia Marx, PhD, joining us on Shavuot this year. Rabbi Dalia Marx, PhD is a published author, preeminent scholar, and college professor. She is the Rabbi Aaron D. Panken Professor of Liturgy and Midrash at HUC-JIR’s Taube Family Campus in Jerusalem.

"I feel so, so fortunate that Rabbi Dalia Marx is coming to Shir Hadash (much to the envy of my rabbinical friends). Professor Marx was my teacher at HUC, and is a world-renowned scholar of Jewish liturgy. It was my introduction to the idea that prayer is a language unto itself, with a beauty many of us have no idea lurks beneath the words. If you ever had a question about prayer, she is your person!"
-Rabbi Michael Walden

We've planned so many fun things to do at our Shavuot Festival, you'll find something special and meaningful for everyone of all ages - get ready to enjoy:

  • 5:30pm Shavuot Beer Garden (adult 21+ only), come and sip a refreshing beer outside on our patio - meet friends new and old and celebrate the joy that Grains bring to our lives. Non-alcoholic beverages also available.
  • 5:30pm Shavuot Children's Festival - we'll have kid-focused crafts, face painting, and activities for different age groups, with activities for age 2 to 6, for age 7 to 12, and for older youth as well! Crafts, snacks, and fun: the children's festival activities will stay open all evening through dinner and the Shavuot Service, so little ones can color, play (quietly) and enjoy the crafts throughout the service as well. Kids are encouraged to dress up as a fruit, vegetable, grain, farmer, bee or butterfly in honor of Shavuot!
  • 6pm Shavuot Dinner - Cost is $25 per adult (age 13 and older) and $15 per youth (age 12 and younger). We'll enjoy specialty savory crepes made on site! Customizing the crepes will be available, and our two recommended options are:
    •  L'Amour Crepe: Garlic sauteed mushrooms, sharp cheddar cheese, onions, seasoned kale, tomatoes, pumpkin seeds, Greek sauce, Avocado
    • Le Charme Crepe: Fried Tofu, Swiss cheese, Thyme roasted bell peppers, onion, Chimichurri sauce, Spinach, Tomatoes, Avocado.
  • 6:30pm Shavuot Service (outside!) - on our patio/grass we'll enjoy singing, praying, celebrating receiving the Torah, and commemorate Shavuot together in community.
  • 7:30pm Shavuot Dessert - get ready for cheesecake and other dairy-licious desserts galore including a chocolate fountain! (timing approximate based on when the service ends)
  • 8pm Festival of Learning (Tikkun Leil Shavuot) - Rabbi Dalia Marx, PhD, will guide an incredible evening for learning - her topic will be "Ruth: Delve into the Bible's most unlikely love story" - join us in study, exploration, and fostering your curiosity! (timing approximate based on when the service and dessert wrap up)
